The benefits of diet and exercise are…endless.
Yesterday on the radio, I heard an advertisement for a weight loss program guaranteeing large amounts of weight loss without doing any exercise, going to the gym or breaking a sweat. As a Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Educator, that is a huge red flag!
Do you know how good exercise is for you?
1.) Exercise can help manage a healthy body weight.
Whether you need to lose weight or gain it, exercise plays a big part into weight maintenance.
In order to burn calories and increase lean muscle mass, you’ve got to move your body! Consistency is a big factor, aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (General American Heart Association Guidelines)
2.) Exercise can prevent chronic disease.
The American Medical Association officially recognizes obesity as a chronic disease and 1 out of 3 adults are considered obese. Being active boosts HDL, or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides, which decreases the risk of heart disease. Exercise can also help people with diabetes improve their blood sugar control. Regular activity helps prevent or manage a wide range of health problems, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, a number of types of cancer, arthritis and falls.
3.) Exercise can improve your mood and energy levels.
Not only will activity stimulate various brain chemicals leaving you feeling happier, it can also build your confidence level. Who doesn’t feel good after accomplishing a great workout and achieving their health goals?
4.) Exercise can be fun, believe it or not and a great way to socialize.
Find a group or someone you enjoy being around! Use them for support and accountability. Whether it is Crossfit, cycling, hiking, bootcamp, tennis, or whatever your heart desires (literally) get out and do it! Summer is here and Northern Colorado has plenty of great places to be active!
