Forced Family Fitness Ideas

Looking for family fitness ideas or new holiday traditions?

I read a meme saying “One of my biggest fears is that I’ll marry into a family that runs 5ks on holidays”. Don’t let this be you!

Today, I registered my family for a 5k turkey trot. There was a lot of grumbling, “it’s too cold” and “do we really have to run 3 miles”? Guess what? Everyone had a great time and we got to see a real live turkey on a leash. Amazing.

Let’s be honest: You’re likely to have a giant meal on holidays…with seconds…and then pie. Why not get a little exercise before? It doesn’t have to be a 5k either, it could be a walk around the block, a friendly football game, a bike ride or whatever gets you moving. Just do it!

My Advice for Family 5ks:

1.) At least warn your family you are signing them up. (I did not consider the altitude adjustment but they survived).

2.) Pick a race with something fun to do at the end. Pick a fun town to explore!

3.) Dress up or wear matching outfits for funny pictures.

4.) If you bring your dogs, dress them up too. 

5.) Ask your family after the race “how much fun they had”. No regrets!

Holiday Hats- Thanksgiving, Christmas

Race Snacks: Rx Bars, Epic Bar,  Camelback
